Description
SS-31, or elamipretide, is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide developed to investigate mitochondrial structure and function. Unlike compounds that act broadly throughout the cell, SS-31 was designed to preferentially associate with mitochondrial membranes, particularly cardiolipin-containing membranes.
Research has examined SS-31 in models involving mitochondrial membrane stability, oxidative stress, electron transport, ATP production, and cellular energy metabolism. These properties have made it an important experimental compound in studies of mitochondrial dysfunction and age-associated cellular changes.
SS-31 is complementary to MOTS-C and NAD+ for research involving mitochondrial biology, although the three compounds represent distinctly different classes of molecules and biological mechanisms.
